To increase the safety of college campuses, nearly ten percent of colleges now require students to submit to background checks before they can live on campus. Other colleges process background checks only on those students who disclose a criminal history on his or her admissions application. The idea of performing formal background checks on potential students is causing a great deal of debate as many colleges don’t want to be accused of “profiling” or discriminating against students who have records. And checks probably would find little on students whose juvenile court records are sealed. With so many supporters on both sides and no clear resolution in site, this issue will continue to be a hot topic.
